Abstract:

For my Interactive Design class, I was tasked with creating an interactive data visualization that included 100 points of data. The project aimed to provide an engaging and informative way to explore data on the types of shoes people wear on a given day, including details such as brand, style, material, colors, price, and condition.

MSU's Translation Center is a recently founded program that ​offer high-quality and affordable translation and interpreting services in over 20 languages across the MSU community and beyond. The Center can provide training, administer language proficiency exams, and develop workshops or classes in specialized topics in a variety of languages. So when I was brought on board my job was to ​Improve usability, appeal, and increase foot traffic.

Testing to Improve

Usability Tests

Conducted 5 usability tests to ensure the design allowed for successful and efficient interaction with the data.

Included 5 individuals with varying levels of familiarity with interactive data visualizations.

Key Findings

All participants were able to navigate and interact with the data visualization.

Issues

Some users found the controls for the 3D environment initially confusing.

Participants wanted more detailed information on each data point.

Solutions

Simplified the controls and added a tutorial for first-time users.

Included more detailed hover-over information for each data point.

Closing Thoughts

This project allowed me to explore new tools and techniques in interactive data visualization. I learned the importance of user feedback in refining and improving design elements.

I plan to continue refining the data visualization platform based on additional user feedback and expanding the dataset for more comprehensive insights.
